Last week was pretty average for us, lots of playing outside and spending time together at home. There were days that were dirtier than others...
Friday, we packed up and jumped in the truck for another trip north to the cabin. It had been 4 weeks since our last trip and we were ready!This time, it was just us and the Sebrights, but that was ok! We had to do a bit of cleaning inside the cabin and some settling in, then we tackled another piece of the yard where a lot of brush and downed trees were piled up. The kids jumped right in, helping to pick up, transport and unload smaller brush. We were blessed with low 80 degree weather all weekend and it was a beautiful weekend to be working outside!
Our truck did the heaving hauling, pulling countless loads of logs and brush piles from the hill down to the back yard to be burned.
Elam enjoyed being a participant in the transportation piece, acting as co-pilot some of the time.
Friday evening, we lit the blaze with the first major pile and sat back to watch it burn down adding more on as the night went on.
Saturday morning, we woke and went back to work, pulling more and more from the same area on the hill. We worked til lunch, took a break, worked some more, then took another break to have some fun with the kids. After they were in their swim suits and white t-shirts, we set them loose with colored water balloons.
When the balloons were all popped and the kids nicely colored, the fun continued with the hose!
Once the kids were dried off and back in clothes, they joined in the helping again. We had cleared most of the brush piles, but still had a few more to go as well as trimming branches. Tony helped the kids work on cutting some down.
Between loads to the fire pit with the truck and the trailer full of brush, the kids played and took rides on the tractor.
Much was cleared out and the landscape changed for the better again by the time we were winding down Saturday evening!
The fire was HOT and the source continuous for quite a while that evening as we pushed the branches on a bit at a time.
As the fire raged on, the kids played..
And found work of their own design. Having located another large tree down in the field, they had gathered branches earlier in the day and then set their sights on getting the large logs up to the fire. Te first one arrived after the kids had lifted it together in the trailer behind the mower.
The second arrived thanks to the efforts of Emmett, Ezri and Alora.
A couple more loose branches to deliver and the project was proclaimed done for the weekend.
That night, after the kids were settled in with their movie, Kathy and I went chasing the sunset, looking for a clear place to enjoy it that was not blocked by the trees that surround much of the area. We finally settled for a spot on a tall hill.
All too soon, the weekend was over and we were packing and cleaning up to head back for home.
